I think this is a Linux specific question because I've never had this problem
on other systems. I'm running the TAMU release of .99pl4. I cannot X to
recognize my hostname. When I type hostname or uname -a (I think uuname also)
it shows the hostname that I have given my machine. However X apps only run if
I use :0 as the DISPLAY name. myhost:0 does not work. Normally this doesn't
matter but some apps such as acm want a server-hostname to connect to.
How can I determine what X thinks my display name really is? Is there another
file I need to update or is it inside the kernel? I grep'ed the source for
'host' but didn't see anything obvious.
Also, I was wondering if I've set up shadow passwords correctly. To be able to
do an su, it seems I must be a member of root's group. First, is this correct?
Is so, is this concept from POSIX or some flavor of UNIX I'm not familiar with?
Just wondering why Linux didn't go with the traditional 'su' run setuid. Maybe
it was just to get away from setuid programs?
Linux is great!
