Yes, an 8-bit XT controller (for old MFM disks) does work.

The driver mentioned here by Max is written by Patrick MacKinlay, and
can be found on the various archives. It is a very straightforward patch
to the linux source tree. It works in combination with the normal
16-bits IDE controller/disk and SCSI stuff, simultaneously.

For people with an old XT disk and controller it is highly recommended.
