Subject: SLS/GCC problem

I just blew away my old setup to load the SLS release. After loading
up everything except X, I went into the TeX sources to build the
little programs that come with it. Unfortunately, after typing
"make," the first .c compiled and then make hung with the following
error:

(null): Unknown job 1291 finished

Hitting ^c didn't do anything. ^z did stop it so I could "kill -9 %."
So, what is the net.wisdom concerning this?

CONFIG:
40MHz 386
4MB RAM
ST-01 adapter w/2 ST-296N drives
ET4000 w/VGA monitor
no coprocessor
2 8MB swap partitions (one on each drive)
10MB /
64MB /usr
