Questions: A) too many libs, B) building shared libs

A)
Last night, I was trying to get a simple X application compiled. It used
the shared libs, and linked fine. When I ran it, it came up, as it should.
When I hit a button that invoked a callback with a printf in it, I got
the message
        Couldn't load -lm
        Too many libraries
(this is from failing memory... the message was something like that).

Now, the libs called in were pretty standard:
-lXaw -lXmu -lXext -lX11 -lXt -lm

I got this to run OK when I used the -nojump switch on the gcc line, but
linking to shared libs is so fast that I would like to figure out why they
failed. Any ideas?

B)
Also, where is a source for how to *build* shared libraries from scratch?
