This is one possibility, but did you mention that then everyone knowing your
root passwd can login as root via telnet then .

Why don't you log in as joe_user and then do a su root to get root on that
port. Doing so one already has to know two passwords ( the joe_user and the
root one ) to get root via telnet.

Normally root logins should only be allowed on ttys where you have a visual
contact to the terminal ( maybe a null-modem connected to ttys? )
