I have a 185MB SCSI Fujitsu that I was trying to partition for an extended
file system, and for days and days I could never figure out how to do mkefs
on it. Each time I ran mkefs, it croaked with an out of memory error. I
have 4 MB installed in my machine, so it should work.

I don't know whether or not the amount of memory required for mkfs and
mkefs is directly proportional to the size of the partition being made.

Anyway, my solution was to create a 16 MB swap partition, mkswap on it,
perform a swapon, and THEN do the mkefs.

Good luck.
