From: meh@math33.sma.usna.navy.mil (Michael E. Hoffman) Subject: ST-02 in Z-386/16? Date: 8 Feb 1993 17:39:00 GMT
As the owner of a 16-MHz Zenith Z-386 (a VERY early 386 machine), I've
been amazed at the stuff I've been able to do with Linux on it. The
processor speed hasn't been that big a problem (I have 5 Meg of memory):
I can do a complete kernel recompilation in 45 minutes. But my big
problem has been DISK SPACE. Which brings me to the subject of this
post.
Currently I'm running two 40-Meg MFM drives (I know, laugh) off my
ancient disk controller. 32 Megs is taken up with MS-DOS stuff I
can't do without, and the rest is Linux. Needless to say, I've been
severely constricted--for the past few months, I have to tar off a
bunch of stuff from the disk every time I want to compile something
big. I've been thinking of getting an external SCSI drive. After
posting on comp.sys.zenith I learned that the Z-386/16 has problems
with the Adpatek 1542. So I thought perhaps a 8-bit board like the
ST-02 would be safer (as well as cheaper and slower--but my system
has plenty of speed bottlenecks anyway). What I'd like to hear are
some stories from folks who have actually used an ST-02 in the Z-386/16
to support a SCSI disk. C'mon, there must be some of you Zenith
hobbyists out there!
