The problem is with version 1.0 of xfree86, It's not saving enough memory
before starting X in order to reconfigure upon exiting, thus you are
not placed back in text mode. This problem was fixed in version 1.1
(but since 1.2 is coming out - you may want to wait and get that version).
There are a couple of ways to fix it, this is just one way (but probably
the easiest?), use the vgalib. If you get the vgalib package from tsx-11
(somewhere under the attic directory) it contains a small program called
runx (the package vgalib comes with SLS but, I don't think runx is in it.
at least it didn't in earlier releases). Once you have runx you start X by
entering 'runx startx'. Your troubles are gone :-).
