It probably just consults the file /etc/passwd, and the shadow system for
passwords just uses the file /etc/shadow. I had a similar inconsistency
with su some time ago....
I'm not sure how to fix it - you could copy the passwd-entry from
/etc/password into the password-field in /etc/passwd.
