I have similar problems and it is not fixed yet.
______
My machine (386 + 4M-RAM + 16M-SWAP + ESDI(WD1005)-disk) cannot
recompile the kernel, because gcc(2.45) does not complete his task and say
"Internal error...."
My system does not crash and produce no cores. The gcc (make ?) stops gently.
______
My other machines (486 + 8M-RAM + 16M-SWAP + ESDI/IDE-disk) can recompile
the kernel without above troubles.

Main memory (not including SWAP) shortages come very often when X is lunched.
Does someone had gcc's "Internal error.." when kernel reconfiguration with
X was lunched (or with other mein memory shrtage) ?
I think this is kernel's bug, not gcc's bug.
How do you think about this problem, everyone ?
