The real problem is that the soft link /dev/swap, which shouldn't be there,
and has subsequently been removed, was being used erroneously in the
dd or mkswap command. Some (well meaning I'm sure) soul posted posted or
mailed these bad instructions to the poor individual involved. I suppose
mkswap could be enhanced to preform the "dd" stage automatically, if
a block device was not supplied, and such instructions added to the
mkswap manpage. Then again, the FAQ does describe the correct procedure.
