I had the same problem just today when I first installed sound support.
The problem turned out to be that I hadn't set up the proper I/O port
address.
In other words, though the device is correct (say /dev/audio 14, 4) it
will still be 'device not found' unles the device initialized properly.
The messages on kernel initialization will say that the sound device
is activated or whatever, but unless you see more messages ('like
FM synthesizer found, etc..) then it's just not right.
So, go ahead and edit the appropriate file in the kernel sources to have
the correct settings and make sure your sound device properly initializes.
Now you can do me a favor, what sound programs exist? I'm getting tired
of cat'ing .au files to /dev/audio :)
