From: ajoseph@is.morgan.com (Adrian Joseph) Subject: HELP-SLS 1.03 installation problem Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1993 07:31:06 GMT
Hi Folks, after spending a merry time downloading the latest SLS
release from tsx-11. I got home booted up with the a1.3 disk and
it looked good. It saw my disk controller (BusLogic 455S), which
is the reason I've been unable to run Linux until now, and the
disk with its partitions [1 dos primary, 1 extended split into
7 logical - sda1(pri),sda2(ext).sda5(/),sda6(/usr),sda7(swap),
sda8(swap),sda9(swap),sda10(swap),sda11(/home)]. Then I ran
the doinstall program, defined sda5, sda6 and sda11 as linux
extended partitions and sda7, sda8, sda9 and sda10 as linux
swap partitions then defined sda5 as root, sda7 as swap and sda6
as /usr. The install program made a file system on the root
partition and claimed it added swap (this may be a lie as a
later swap message suggested swap was much less than the
16MBytes of the partition). Okay then I got on with the
installation, but on the third or fourth item disaster the
system crashes with errors about the swapper, not always quite
the same, but along the lines of:
general protection: 0000
EIP: 0010:0010C873
EFLAGS 00010212
.
.
.
Pid: 0, process nr:0
task[0] (swapper) killed:unable to recover
Kernel panic: Trying to free up swapper memory space
In swapper task - not syncing
So, I'm crestfallen :-(. This may well be a simple error,
but I was too tired to continue. Any help wil be much
appreciated. If it will help I can supply all the information
from a couple of the crashes (register values etc). Anyway
I live in hope if a quick and simple fix, thank you for your
time and trouble, have fun
Adrian
