Dear Linux users:
I have been using Linux for several months without problem but have
noticed that occasionally when the computer starts to boot DOS from the
hard drive it gives the error message: "Non-system disk or disk error".
If I do another reset it usually boots DOS fine the second time.
I am presently booting Linux from a floppy and DOS from the hard drive.
Apparently the DOS boot sequence is confused by the presence
of Linux?
I have DOS 5.0 on one partition and Linux .99pl9 on the other.
My motherboard is a NICE 486SX25 with AMI BIOS 1990.
I haven't really worried about this problem until recently when
my friend tried to install Linux. He has a Dell System 425 S/L
with Phoenix 80486 ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A07. Unfortunately,
his system would never boot DOS off the hard drive properly and he is
forced to always boot both DOS and Linux from a floppy.
His error message is: Missing Operating System.
I thought I remembered seeing a reference to this type of problem
a few months ago, but I don't recall it being elaborated on.
Does anyone know what is causing this boot problem? Any suggestions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian Kendrick
