Has anyone here heard of a wysiwyg-wordprocessor, which is called "ez" and is part of
the "andrew-toolkit" ?
It is available for free via ftp on liasun3.epfl.ch : /pub/X/andrew.tar.z (8167743 Bytes).
I don't know, how good it is as I didn't manage to compile the program.
(You need lots of free disk-space to compile the whole program, about 120 Megs for the whole package.)
This sounds a lot but I think that most parts of the tool-kit aren't needed for the word-processor, so you
might just erase the files you don't need (multimedia-mailer, etc.).
Though I think that it's easyer to compile the whole thing and then erase the files that you don't need
becaus a lot of things are figured out automatically then.
Some people here told about there Gigabyte-hdd's. So maybe they got enough free disk-space to
try to port the package.
So far that I could figure it out (article in a german computer-magazine) the a.t.k. *does*
equatation-formatting.
Besides, it's possible to integrate objects like spreadsheets or drawings in the document.
So it seems to have a lot of nice features.
I personally would prefer a word-processor, which is especially written for Linux (or Gnu/FSF),
as I would like to see Linux becoming a commonly accepted operating-system. It has the means.
Though this might take it's time. You can't write a good word-processor just like this.
So in the mean-time, if *someone* manages to port the package, it might help out for a while.
I would like to point out that I tried to port the thing, but I haven't got enough free disk-space to be
succesfull. Or, more important, I don't have enough experience to do a sufficient port.
So I'm just posting this because I think that other people might be interested in the package, too.
Not to let other people do my work.
About this discussion TeX vs. WYSIWYG :
I think that different people need different things. To ensure that Linux will become
a commonly accepted operating-system (which I would like it to become) and let other people than just
enthusiasts like myself consider it to be a good choice, you need *all* kinds of software, and last, but
not least a WYSIWIG-Wordprocessor.
Most time I don't care (Sometimes I do) about nice and coulored icons, buttons or whatsoever.
But it has to be powerfull and people need to have the choice.
If they then decide to use TeX moreoften than the wordprocessor, well, it's up to them.
But why isn't it possible, that those people, that would like to have a wordprocessor start writing one,
which might be better than those commercially available on the market and as well good looking ?
Those people that like using TeX can keep on using it. You got yout tool. We haven't.
So why the discusion
(I hate vi !!!!!!!)
