...another possibility is that the ISA bus speed is set higher than the
default 8MHz. When setting up Linux on a 386/40 clone, I had to drop the
bus speed back, as I was getting all sorts of strange errors, including
the above. It was running 10MHz under DOS. I believe that the problem
occurs by corruption of swap space which leads to a SEGV eventually.
Further evidence of this was corrupt characters in text files that
mysteriously vanished once the file was re-read from disk, instead of
being viewed from the copy in the RAM cache. So you get corruption of
swap space *and* disk cache. Go into the BIOS and make sure you aren't
running a higher (non-std.) bus speed.
