BTW, if your modem supports v.42bis and MNP5 compression, and you can turn them
off separately, I'd suggest turning ON v.42bis and turning OFF MNP5. The
reason is, v.42bis is a "smart" compression - it will figure out from the
data stream if it needs to compress or not. MNP5 is an older data compression
algorithm, and will try and compress already compressed data, slowing down the
modem and affecting throughput. MNP5 also adds data to files that are already
compressed, making the modems send extra data, again slowing throughput.
