Well, I missed the discussion abt subject 'Bad SLS 1.03' so maybe,
I do kinda repost ...
Yesterday, 5. August, I downloaded SLS 1.03 and uploaded to my
machine.
It's a LION 486-33 EISA/VLB, 20 MB RAM and 200 MB SCSI for Linux,
the only non-ISA is an Adaptec 1742B controller, all working *very*
fine under SLS 1.02 ...
First thing I got to realize is, that the new install login/command
works great, but, unfortunally, sysinstall ignores patch disks, altho
it asks, whether there are some. It prompts correct, but doesn't install
them !
Well, I didn't really mind and rebooted, but I was shocked, when I got
the message that /dev/sda3 (my /usr) wasn't mounted. I found out that
/etc/fstab wasn't correct. /usr was set to mount to /root//usr ! *ARGH*
Wasn't a real problem, but some newbies could get frustrated ....
Now, I fixed that already.
Next I tried to run Lilo, edited /etc/lilo/config and /etc/lilo/disktab (?)
ran sh ./install and rebooted. All I got was a 'LI' and the machine stopped
running. *ARGH* again ... (YES ! I activated /dev/sda1 by fdisk !!!)
So I thought it's a kernel failure, and entered /usr/src/linux, ran
'make config' and edited 'Makefile' and missed the keyboard definitions !
*ARGH*
I DO know that an english keyboard leyout is more handy for UN*X/LinuX,
but I prefer a german layout (don't wanna buy a new keyboard).
Last thing, I have to 'critizise' is, that SLS seems to be kinda chaotic to
me. There are some commands, residing in more than one directory,
e.g. /bin/compress and /usr/bin/compress or /etc/syslogd and /usr/bin/syslogd
(but /usr/bin/syslogk, which should be in /etc).
On the other side, there are commands sticking in /bin, which should be in
/usr/bin and vice versa ...
I would be *very* glad, if some of the next releases would handle diskspace
more effective.
I'm sorry for kinda flaming, but LinuX is such a *GREAT* system, and I am
so frustrated, now ...
sincerely,
Chris
