First off: GET RID OF DBLSPACE!! It has _major_ bugs! :(
Now don't go flaming me for saying this. If you want proof, e-mail me.
Keep this MS-DOS discussion out of this newsgroup!
I would recommend Stacker (besides, it gets better compression)

No: dblspace works just like any other drive compression program:
The CVF (Compressed Volume File) is on an MS-DOS formatted partition.
It uses its own algorithms to compress files real-time into one large file.
(Dblspace is a _program_ that runs _in_ MS-DOS)
Linux uses its own (read different) format (filesystem)
Linux is a stand alone (real) operating system, not a program running in
MS-DOS, so there is no way to run linux from a Dblspaced disk.

>Is it necessary to remove DblSpace first (quite an exercise, btw) ?

Like I said above GET RID OF IT!! (nothing to do with linux)

>The FAQ says Stackers works fine with Linux...

I don't know which FAQ you are refering to, as I have only seen comments
on how to _access_ a stacked drive from _within_ linux using dosemu
(MS-DOS EMUlator), _not_ running linux from a compressed drive.
(Big difference)

You will have to repartition your drive to run linux. Linux needs
its own (isolated) partition.

    I have installed on my 486DX-50 VL-Bus machine MS-DOS 6.0 and
linux 0.99pl11 with no problems. In fact, MS-DOS 6.0 has a very nice
advantage over its predecessors: multi-config. I have a program called
bootlin.com that runs from MS-DOS's config.sys menu to boot linux.
It's _very_ fast! :) (instead of LILO from a floppy) It has other
very nice advatages I won't waste bandwidth on.
I have (2) 340MByte hard drives one for MS-DOS and one for linux.
They get along _fine_.
