    If you're using the stepdown in /etc/gettydefs, don't. With a high
speed modem and flow control, you should let the modem handle the
translation and run the port at 38,400 all the time.
    Try this line in gettydefs.

38400# B38400 CS8 CRTSCTS # B38400 SANE -ISTRIP CRTSCTS #@S login: #38400
