Subject: [NEED HELP] Compiling new kernel for IBM Valuepoint
Date: Wed, 4 Aug 1993 06:49:57 GMT

#3 in a series of 43,728 :-) questions regarding IBM VP and Linux...........

Hi I'm one of the people who have the IBM Valuepoints and wish to run
Linux, X, and all the other wonderful UNIX tools we've grown to love.

I obtained the "a1.test" disk from nic.funet.fi which allowed me to
install linux to my hard drive (SLS 1.02 )but, as far as I can see, it is
missing the device support for the PS/2 mouse.

I'd now like to compile a new kernal I can use to boot my system ( off of
a floppy ) and because I'm still a *newbie* <:^( I need a few questions
answered:

(1) Is there a pre-compiled kernel out there with PS/2 mouse and
Valuepoint support that allows me to boot to a partition on my hard drive?

If not...

(2) What are the lines I need to change in
    "/usr/src/linux/kernel/blk_dev/hd.c" so that
the kernal can read my hard drive?

I've found the chunk that reads in cylinders, sectors and heads but
there are 2 more values that are unknown to me ( one is ctl, I
believe). I tried hardcoding in the cyls, secs, and heads but
when I try to boot it hangs...

The solution to this was posted a while back.

(3) How do I create a disk that allows me to boot off of a floppy to
my root partition (in my case /dev/hda3 )?

Thanks in advance...

David
