I had meant something like:

Video card:
        Good et4000 based, 1M ram, on PC AT bus $80
        Better s3 based, 1M ram and up, on PC AT bus $150
        Best s3 based, on local bus $200

        (both s3 and et4000 work better on local bus of course. To run
        them at top resolutions you need a monitor with fast enough
        refresh frequency, or else you get flicker).

Disk controller
        Good "default" IDE controller $50
        Better SCSI controller (Adaptec 1542b is a safe choice) $200
        Best SCSI controller on local bus (expect some driver hassles) $300

Etc.

BTW I just priced a Linux workstation vs. a Classic and the Classic still
looks great....
