Linux just happens to use bash as it's primary shell, but you could put
in some other shell in its place and then you wouldn't see this problem.
The problem is GNU's, not Linux's.

Ahh- but bash is *NOT* the responsibility of Linus and the Linux developers.
A patch has been developed that solves this problem, but the GNU folks
haven't released a new version of bash. So you *might* be justified in
saying "GNU sucks" for not releasing a new version, or "SLS sucks" for not
making the patched version of the shell a part of its standard distribution,
but it has nothing to do with Linux, the OS, itself, especially since other
distributions have the fixed bash instead.
In any case, almost all shells have bugs- as an example the SunOS/Solaris
sh/csh both have bugs that were discovered several years ago. They're still
there in the latest release... Perhaps "Sun sucks" or "Unix-in-general sucks"
too?? Or maybe it's you.. Yeah! "Ross sucks"!!

No- he didn't say anything because you're beneath his contempt and
because he didn't want to start a flame war, but I have no such qualms.
On with the war...

Read the comp.unix.* groups and other Unix-type OS groups.. I think you'll
see more posts about problems than in the Linux group. Linux just seems
to have problems because there are so many newbies who are having install
and compile problems with various things. You can blame Linus for making
it freely available for that, but if you filter those out, I think you'll
find that the actual number of messages dealing with actual problems
with the Linux kernel and core utilities are relatively small.

Yes- Coherent's shell is broken, it's been broken since the very first
release, and it hasn't been fixed yet. MS-LOSS?? Command.com has *zero*
features, it has remained basically identical to the very first command.com
and it still has a few bugs..- "MS-DOS sucks" (actually, this *is* true)
AmigaDOS? Now this really *is* beneath my contempt.. AmigaDOS itself is
broken... I'll take Amiga Unix with it's broken shell over AmigaDOS any
day...
