If you typed "X386mono" to start X windows then this behavior is
explainable. The program you ran was just the X server, nothing more. To
start it correctly in mono mode (since that's the one that works for you),
you should soft link X to X386mono. Then when you run startx, the mono
server will kick in. Using startx should also provide a default setup -- on
my machine, that's three xterms and an xclock. That configuration came with
XFree 1.3 right out of the box.
As far as your color display problems are concerned, you might want to try
SuperProbe (in /usr/X386/bin). It can help you determine if your video card
is supported by X386.
