I'm not sure but I think that once a fs is marked dirty simply mouning and
unmounting it is not enough to mark it clean. However I suspect if
you have got /etc/rc* fsck'ing your / before remounting it rw this is
probably not your problem.

I trust your / is listed in your /etc/fstab - if not umount -a may not
try to unmount it. More likely you have the problem I was having in that
umount -a is failing because daemons still have files open. I got around
this by getting a new sysvinit as it seemed the old one I had was not killing
processes started by /etc/rc.

Now when I drop down to single user mode init will ``umount -a''. Redundant
perhaps but it made testing the bootutils a lot easier.

It may not matter but I'd certainly recomend you get the latest e2fsck.
