From: pdh@netcom.com (P D H) Subject: /dev/tty00 vs /dev/cua00 and other device confusions Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1993 20:09:36 GMT
I received a copy of a new device list (from April 27) and while trying
to debug my failing serial ports, I find ambiguities I cannot figure out
in this list.
To start with, the standard COM1..COM4 are being considered "board 0" so
that is simple enough to deal with. But these ports are usable for both
dial-out and dial-in. Does this really require not only different names
but different major numbers? It would seem this would get confusing to
the device driver(s).
There is also the confusion of where a SCSI QIC tape will be found.
Major 9 (/dev/st0...) and major 12 (/dev/rmt16...) seem to be at odds
here if the tape is SCSI. An explanation that might resolve this,
which is neither included nor known to be the case, would be that major
12 is for tapes connected via a QIC-02 interface instead of SCSI.
Can someone clear this up?
BTW, my SLS system came with /dev/fd1H1722 existing. There was no
/dev/fd0H1722, nor anything high (1.8 meg DOS formatting is possible)
Was this some "debris" left over? Will there be any standards for
extended format floppies?
Also I noted /dev/core ... make sure your core cleaner script tests for
regular files (find / -type f -name core -exec rm {} ';').
