Subject: Problems with NFS on 0.99.9
Date: 30 Apr 1993 13:02:59 -0400

I have been having some problems which seems to be connected with NFS
on linux 0.99.9. My setup is as follows:

Comusys 486 generic PC
8MB ram
10MB swap
2 disk partitions (I can't remember the sizes)
wd ethernet card

I recently upgraded the from 0.99p3, in order to get Xfree 1.2 to work
properly with the hardware. Due to disk space limitations I keep the
bulk of X windows off this machine, on another one, whose disk is
mounted on the linux box. This means that only the files in X386/bin
are on the linux box. When I boot with the new kernel, everything
seems to work fine, but running startx results in a strage error.
Frequently it complains: Unable to set font path to "...", and then
bombs when trying to set the default font, however, the actual error
message varies between runs.

I have had errors as strange as "unknown keyword Virtual" on the line
Virtual 1024 1024, and also "can't find mode 800x600", when this mode
is clearly defined (Xfree works with previous kernel versions).

Listing the directory of the nfs mounted disk produced strange
problems - sometimes the same file appeared twice (I haven't seen this
error recently, but it seem to occur quite frequently when I first
booted the kernel). Also performing a du -s /disk produces strange
results -
/disk/linux/linux_X1.2/bin/xclient - not found

The file(s) which are listed as "not found" change between invocations
of du. I can only assume, that when the directory is read that either
bogus filenames are being returned, or the nfs client is bevahing
irrrationally. (I haven't checked to see if the files claimed `not
found' actually exist, although looking at some of the names it seems
unlikely).

The only conclusion I can come to is that the nfs filesystem has been
broken on this release

Supplementary Information:

NFS Server is and HP720 running HPUX 8.07.
