I'm working on this one. :) Peter (author of poeigl) and Miquel (author
of sysvinit) have been kind enough to modify their code to be compatible
with SVID utmp updating. Hopefully soon, all versions of init/getty/login
will work together properly.

By the way, using sysvinit-2.2 and poeigl-1.11a works fine for me.
