They shouldn't. :-( Fortunately, you can just use gunzip on either kind.

I believe .tgz is the "official" GNU tar-and-gzip extension. Use that
or .tar.z

".tpz" was "the typo that stuck". When SLS switched to gzip, ".tzp"
(tar-zip) was suggested. Unfortunately, Peter typed ".tpz" and a new
extention was born. SLS has (will be?) moved to the standard .tgz
