Some of these extensions seem to be inconsistently used. It seems we now
have 3 different extensions for 2 different formats. Anyone really know
the story?
The FAQ leaves things somewhat ambiguous and is not correct with regard
to reality as well. There are a lot of .taz files out there that use
the gzip compression. Is it a LINUX standard to use .tgz or is it a GNU
standard? (If the latter, at least we can point some fingers at people
who put out some of these files).
What's the deal with .tpz vs. .tgz? Was this a change in standard or
a misinterpretation? Is this a GNU change or a LINUX change?
The only standard I had known about was the use of .z for gzipped files
and .Z for LZW compressed files. This doesn't work well for those of us
that still have to use DOS as a file staging area for downloads (while
trying to get things configured to make communications work on LINUX).
BTW, I had a number of questions when I first read the FAQ. Afterwards
I ended up with MORE questions. Fortunately my knowledge did increase
in the process (certainly that mission of the FAQ is working). How would
it be best to get the remaining and new questions answered? Should I post
them one by one on the net (delaying many while I try to research them
some more) or put them all together like another FAQ so someone can fill
in the answers and treat it like an FAQ (and maybe work them into the
real FAQ where they would be useful)?
