PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

I FTP'd SLS 1.01 from sunsite.unc.edu last Friday (4/23). Boot up with the
a1 disk and get this:

Welcome to the SLS install/boot disk. You may login now as "root".
To begin an installation, first use "mke2fs -c /dev/XXX SIZE where XXX
is the partition you wish to install. Then type "doinstall /dev/XXX"
For example: to install to a 90 Meg partition /dev/hda2, you would type:

    mke2fs -c /dev/hda2 90000
    doinstall /dev/hda2

Type "install.info" for information on installation and partitioning.

Now, the tape drive was on all the while, so I figure that Linux couldn't
recognize it coz the controller card uses a different chipset. (Anyone uses
this tape drive/card combo? Any advice?)

So I log in as root and do:
===============================================================================
softland:/# fdisk
Using /dev/hda as default device!

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/hda: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 659 cylinders

   Device Boot Begin Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 1 658 331600+ 6 DOS 16-bit >=32M
===============================================================================
So I say to myself: Why not convert it all to Linux?
===============================================================================
Command (m for help): t
Partition number (1-4): 1

At this point, I have to power-cycle, since /etc/halt does not exist on the
a1 disk, and my Compaq doesn't have a reset button. 8-(

After getting the standard bootup display and logging in as root:
===============================================================================
softland:/# mke2fs -c /dev/hda1 331600
mke2fs 0.2d, 93/03/30 for EXT2 FS 0.2c, 93/03/06

8192 fragments per group

===============================================================================
The HD light comes on, stays on for about a minute or so, and then goes off.
No prompt, can't type anything --> system frozen.

Did I do anything wrong, or is this a bug or incompatibility? (I know
Compaqs are queer beasts, but I didn't expect them to be *this* queer.)

HELP! Please. 8-)

Thks in advance for any assist. Email me your replies and I'll post a summary
at the appropriate juncture.
