Subject: SLS 99-pl8 works on my machine!!! (finally)
Date: 28 Apr 1993 01:51:41 GMT

I've been wanting to run Linux on my (rather cheesy) machine for
the last couple of months, but have had little success. It
would start to boot, and then hang. The task table would
have maybe four processes, and then...nothing. The disks
would boot off other machines fine, so I figured it was
my (rather cheesy) machine [Magnavox 386sx-16]

Anyway, I thought I'd give it another try after seeing
the announcement for a more recent version.

It booted! But I kept getting "387 failed: trying to reset"
messages. I have an ITT3c87-16, but had never had any trobule
with it before [running DOS, but I did use programs that used
the 387] Anyway, I removed the jumper that was necessary for
the 387 to operate, and told the CMOS that I didn't have one
(it guessed I didn't have one because there was no jumper.)

Anyway, I kept getting the 387 error message. Doinstall would
not run, it would get floating point error and crash out. I
had to run off floppy, it would hang after the decompression part.

So I got out a long needle and pryed the 387 out of its socket.

It works! I'm so happy.

Anybody know why I might have a problem with the 387? I think the
ITT was on the compatibility list, alothough my (rather cheesy)
machine is not. I'd like to use the 387, but would rather use
Linux sans 387, than MSDOS with.

Thanks.
Emery
