There is a comment by the author speculating on this. I have not tried it.
I found after prodding from a friend that the window variable can make a
difference. I use 5. You might experiment as I did.
Neither one of you guys says what your DTE speed is. To get the most
compression out of v42bis, your DTE speed on both ends needs to be as fast
as possible, and faster than the modem-modem speed.

I am using term sun-sun with both DTE's at 38,400 and a v32 connection.
