Subject: NEWBIE has read FAQ's, seeks answers.

I've spent the past 2 days reading through more FAQ's, info-sheets, etc.,
than I care to think about. I *think* I might even have the answers to
some of these questions, but I am unsure, as some things are not covered
explicitly in the FAQ.

At the risk of being flamed, then:

Info:
On me: Still learning UNIX and C, but coming along very quickly.
The more I read, the more I get sold on Linux over other freeware
      *nixes.
On the machine: I'll shortly be buying a 486-50DX (NOT DX2!) Dell (?)
notebook with the biggest hard drive they'll let me stuff in there.
8 or 16 meg of RAM - again, as much as they'll let me pay for.
I'll make sure I have the correct bus, etc. - all in the FAQ, right?
Also, the fastest modem I can get my hands on.

Questions:

* I was thinking of using my box to set up a public access unix(*) that
would run nights and weekends. I think I've located a news/mailfeed, etc.
Down the road, perhaps be my own Internet site. I've read the GPL
repeatedly, and it looks legal. [If it ain't, someone please tell me.]
The question: Is it practical? If so, why? If not, why not? After
reading the FAQ, et al, I estimate that I could do this using only
100-120 meg of my HD (to run a small setup). Is this an accurate
  estimate? If not, why not?

* This would not be my only use. Some of the things I'll be doing on my
own time would be things in DOS and Windows. I've read repeatedly that
if the partitions, etc. are OK, I should have no problems with DOS.
Does this extend to Windows? This may sound like a flaky question, but
MSWindows has a habit of doing stupid shit (MicroSoft in general has this
same habit), and I'd hate to have my Windows projects f***ing up something
  _really_ useful.

(*) The P/A *nix mentioned above would be for profit, if that wasn't clear.

Email me or post answers here.

Thanks in advance for your time and advice.
