Subject: Trouble using GNU mt and weof

I am trying to do the following using GNU mt:

    mt -f /dev/nst0 weof 1

But I get the following error message:

    mt: /dev/nst0: Permission denied

I am doing this as root. I am able to write to the tape since I can use
tar or cpio to put files on the tape. I can also use the rewind command
with mt.

I am using GNU mt version 2.2. I am running Linux v0.99pl9 on a 486DX50,
Wangtek 5150 1/4" tape drive (150MB), and Adaptek 1542B scsi card.

Any insight will be greatly appreciated.
