I haven't tried the *.au player yet, but I would say that it _is_ possible
to get acceptable sound quality on the PC speaker in 8/16 bit modes.
There is a Windows utility which drives the PC speaker with MOD files,
and on my Linux box there is a surprisingly good quality speaker so
much so that I have to lower the volume at night (when my roommates are
sleeping).
Anyhow, if Windows can do it, maybe Linux can do it, no?
