If it makes you feel any better, I had X and the newest Xview
package crammed into less than 14 mb. It was definitely a tight
squeeze. No mono server. All static libraries had to go (for X
and Xview, that is), the xview examples, man pages were gzip'ed
(I'm using the perl-man set), and I picked and chose among what
struck me as silly X apps (couldn't let xeyes go though). Oh,
and I nuked olwm and linked it to olvwm.
I don't know if this is vaild or superstitiion on my part, but I
untarred everything (piece by piece) into /usr/tmp and then cp'd
over to the proper destination. It seems that direct untarring
doesn't create holes?
