Subject: X11 and distortions!!! Pleahelp
Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1993 17:29:42 GMT

I a have problem on my X display. I can get X up and running. Everything
seems to be working OK. Howerver, as I move a whole window around (e.g
xterm window) on my display I see horizontal distortions on different
parts of the screen ONLY WHILE I AM MOVING THE WINDOW. They disappear
very quickly or as soon as the window stops moving (may be this effect
is called a "shimmer"). This particularly noticeable on the outer edges
of the vertical side of the borders of the window. I notice this effect
on 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768, however it gets worse and worse on
higher resolutions. I have tried these resolution at vertical refresh
rates of 60 - 74 Hz but refresh rate doesn't seem to have any effect.
Please note that under DOS/WINDOWS (where I do use a driver provided by
ORCHID) I don't have a problem however I am running it in 16 colors
instead of 256 colors (I think). I have the following hardware:

        486/66 DX2, ORCHID Faherenhiet VA/VLB video card, IDEK 5315
        multi-sync monitor.

Orchid card is S3 (805) based so I am using XS3 (0.4.4 I think) with
"vendor=nonlinear" option.

I have some additional questions:

what other fonts can I run other 75dpi on 800x600 and how ?

        How do I confgure X for 16 colors instead of 256 ?

Thanks in advance!
