I agree with what you say about power cycling.

Not when you have to pay 13 cents per KWH. :)

However, the box usually draws considerably less power than what it
is rated for. You'll need a wattmeter to be sure, but it'll probably
be < 50-70 watts depending on what's in there.

The monitor will draw more, naturally, and it makes sense to just
turn the monitor off when the system is not in use, and keep the
system running all the time.
