Subject: XOpenDisplay error with xdm, X8514 server.

I can't seem to get xdm to work at all. It starts up and I get the
standard background, complete with the mouse crosshairs (however, the
mouse does not work at all). It simply hangs at this point. No login
window or anything else. However, I am able to c-alt-del and init
performs a controlled shutdown. These are the errors I receive in xdm-errors:

Setting TCP SO_LINGER: Protocol not available
no SIOCGIFCONF yet
X386 Version 1.2 / X Windows System [linux v1.1 8514/A alpha]
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 5000)

ibm8514
error (pid 108): Hung in XOpenDisplay(:0), aborting
error (pid 108): server open failed for :0, giving up
error (pid 106): Display :0 cannot be opened

Any advice is appreciated.
