: The comp.os.linux group is getting very big, and though regular readers
: will not realize this JUST BECAUSE they are regular readers, as newbie
: will have a very difficult time finding the FAQ. I've been away a while
: and I ran into the following problems just finding the FAQ:

: 1. There were over 13000 articles in this newsgroup to sift through.
: The newbie may or may not be fully versant in the tools of reading
: news to speed this up.

: 2. I tried a regexp (key "=" in nn) to find the FAQ. It selected a lot
: of articles, which I proceeded to read (key "Z" in nn so I stay here
: when done). I read through all those articles. Some referred to the
: FAQ, but there was no FAQ.

: 3. The newsgroup news.answers is supposed to be the universal resource.
: I searched for comp.os.linux there. Nothing.

: 4. There is PIT-MANAGER.MIT.EDU, an FTP repository of all kinds of usenet
: stuff. I did find the FAQ here, but with duplication that I questioned
: and funny names. The duplicates are really duplicates (i.e. a waste
: of space).

: 5. After some further reading I finally bumped into the FAQ here. The
: keywords I expected were absent. I therefore recommend to whoever
: posts the FAQ (now or later) to please put the follwoing keywords
: in the SUBJECT of the FAQ postings: "faq" and "comp.os.linux" (the
: latter for readers of news.answers).

: Maybe someday, I too, can enjoy the pleasures of flaming newbies for dumb
: questions that are already answered. But I will hold back until it becomes
: easy to find the FAQ.

I apologize to anyone who may have taken offense to my post: I apparently
spoke without thinking. I was not pointing my finger at anyone - I was
simply trying to warn, for I have seen posts in the past where people
complianed about newbies asking questions answered in FAQs. You're right:
I can see how anyone new to the forum would have a bear of a time trying to
find anything. I leave for a few days and upon returning I find several
hundred new messages, most of which go unread(ah the joys of the catchup
filter :-) Please forgive me for overstepping my bounds(especially
since I've wasted enough bandwidth posting this). Newbies SHOULD be
helped as much as possible and not flamed, if for no other reason then
to help spread the idea of a free, powerful OS that everyone can use(not
to mention to garner application support).
