Ingres was originally a research project of the University of
California at Berkeley. As such it was made freely available to anyone
who wanted it. It was later spun-off as a commercial product but the
original implementation remains freely available. This does not, of
course, include the add on goodies such as SQL support, QBE front-ends
and so forth that businesses like to spend big bucks on.
