For a real paint program, and quite a nice one have a look at Xpaint. it compiles
painlessly and is very expandable if you want to hack new toys onto its already
large collection.

There is some free/gnu fax software around. I don't know if it compiles
under Linux, but I would be suprised if it didn't. It has some fairly
precise requirements on fax standards for your faxmodem.
