Since lots of people seem to be interested about playing these *.au files, you
might want to know that I'm working on a driver to emulate /dev/audio using a
digital/analog converter attached to one of the parallel ports. Unfortunately,
only in my spare time can I work on it, and since I'm swamped with work and
recently ran into a bit of a snag it might take a bit of time. Still,
preliminary tests proved encouraging, with acceptable sound quality. However,
if we only get marginally acceptable sound using 8 bits there's no way you
would be able to understand, say, human speech, with plus or minus 5 bits you
vcan get on the pc speaker, even if you could drive the thing at 8000 hz. So I
see the pc speaker as a dead end in terms of sound hardware, unless you
onlybeep it or something.
