I have recently swapped the Tseng 4000 card I have been using for windows
and linux (X) out for an ATI Graphics Ultra hoping to gain greater speed
and a nicer looking screen (the low refresh rate of my old tseng on my
big montor makes for really annoying viewing). The nicer refresh part
worked great and under windows the speed increase was noticable although
not huge.
On the linux side of things I obtained the X8514 alpha server from tsx-11
and installation went smoothy and it looks quite nice. The only problem
is it seems very slow. This doesn't jive with my notion of the advantages
of an 8514. I realize the server is a beta version and as such a lot
of 8514 fuctions may not have been implemented. Does anyone have info on
the progress going on here? I'd hate to have to switch back to my inferior
Tseng card just so I can display bitmaps acceptably quickly.
One note: the README with the 8514 alpha server says it was compiled
for linux 98.? I think. Would recompiling it with the newer libs give
any appreciable speed increase? I weep to think of my snazzy card sitting
in my computer largely unused.
