Well, the Windows driver could set some registers on your card; when you
soft-boot, these don't get erased. Then you run Linux, and those registers
are how they should be to get into X. When you hard-boot, the power gets cut,
and the registers are restored to defaults, which are not good for X.

One way to figure out what is being done is to write a program to dump
your card's registers; then run it before & after you run windows, and see
what's different. Then, write a program to set the registers, and run that
before you run X.
