Hi, there. I'm so impressed with Linux that I'm going to be weaning myself
off my trusty Amiga and using the Linux box as my Main Machine. If I do this,
I need to know what tools are available for the things I do.
I notice that there is very little mention of applications here (I tried
the X-Windows group - they don't talk about apps much eather, and when they
do, I'm never sure if the app would run under Linux) BTW, in considering
splitting this group, I'd like to reccommend an .apps sub-group.
Anyway, counld someone give me some reccomendations for the following
apps:
- (Word Processing is taken care of. I like micro-Emacs and groff, and
if I outgrow them, there's TeX.)
- Spreadsheets
- Database manager (I can use text files and the rich array of text
utilities available such as awk, grep, and sort, but if there's a nice,
simple DBMS out there...)
Now for the tough stuff (I'm assuming I'll have X running):
- GIF/JPEG viewer: I've seen several. Which is the best?
- Graphics converter: JPEG <-> EPS, etc. especially with scale, crop,
etc.
- Paint program: or at least some method of bitmap editing.
- FAX send//receive
- CAD
Hardware/software combos:
- Video capture: grey-scale is fine.
- EPROM programmer: (OK, I'm dreaming!)
Although I'd prefer public domain stuff, If someone can recommend a
commercial app that's not too expensive and runs on Linux, that would be OK.
You can post responses or E-mail - I'll post a summary if there's enough
response.
THANKS!
