some ups's do this sort of thing the other way around - they have the
power supply notify the computer a little before the power goes away.
while this is obviously the best way for a ups, mightn't it also be
easier for this purpose, too? having the computer look for an
asserted something in a serial line and then run halt shouldn't be
particularly difficult to swing.
