More memory is definately better.

However, if you are stuck with only 4M :

- Use the monochrome server instead, mono images require 12.5%
        of the memory that color images take.

- Pare down the kernel to more workable size by compiling out the
        features you don't use - ie TCP/IP, SCSI, etc.

- Use a swap partition instead of a swap file, it's noticeably
        faster.
