With respect to statically linked shells and a small set of needed utilities,
I am about to announce "sash", which is designed to solve all these problems.
It should appear within a couple of days. (I don't have ftp write access, so
I have to ask to put it on an ftp site.) If that fails, than I'll post it
here as a shar file.
